Geography of Kauai
Kauai, one of the Hawaiian Islands. Kauai is nicknamed Garden Island for its lush vegetation and abundant rainfall. It is in the North Pacific Ocean between the islands of Niihau and Oahu. The island covers 549 square miles (1,422 km2).
Kauai is of volcanic origin and, geologically, is one of the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands. The island is mountainous and heavily forested. At 5,243 feet (1,598 m), Kawaikini Peak is Kauai's highest point. Tourism and sugar production are the leading sources of income. One of the island's chief tourist attractions is Waimea Canyon.
Kauai suffered widespread damage from Hurricane Iniki in 1992.
