Geography of Great Falls

Great Falls, Montana, the seat of Cascade County. Great Falls is on the Missouri River, 73 miles (117 km) northeast of Helena. Deposits of coal, copper, zinc, lead, and silver, and oil and gas fields are in the area. Great Falls has smelters, refineries, iron works, meat-packing plants, and grain elevators. Malmstrom Air Force Base and the University of Great Falls are here. The Charles M. Russell Museum and Original Studio features the work of Russell, the “cowboy artist.” Great Falls was founded in 1884.
