Geography of Emporia

Emporia, Kansas, the seat of Lyon County. It lies on the Neosho River, about 110 miles (177 km) southwest of Kansas City. Emporia is the trade center of a stock-raising and grain-growing region and has food-processing and manufacturing plants. Emporia State University is here. Emporia was founded in 1857. It was made nationally prominent by William Allen White, who was editor and publisher of the Emporia Gazettefor about 50 years.
