Geography of Bay City
Bay City, Michigan, the seat of Bay County. It is at the mouth of the Saginaw River on Saginaw Bay, Lake Huron, 100 miles (160 km) north of Detroit. Bay City is an important marketing center for the rich agricultural area of lower Michigan known as the "Thumb region" (owing to its shape). The city is also one of the busiest ports on Lake Huron. Among its products are beet sugar, automobile parts, power cranes and shovels, cement, and knitted items.
Saginaw Bay and the lakes north of Bay City are noted for fishing and swimming facilities. Bay City was settled in 1836 and for years was a great lumbering center. It was incorporated in 1859 and received a city charter in 1865.
