Geography of Council Bluffs
Council Bluffs, Iowa, the seat of Pottawattamie County. It is on the east bank of the Missouri River, opposite Omaha, Nebraska. Council Bluffs is a railway center and has a number of small manufacturing industries. It is also the trade center for the surrounding agricultural area. Dodge House, home of G. M. Dodge, a Civil War general and railway builder, is a National Historic Landmark.
The name Council Bluffs is said to have come from a council Lewis and Clark held on the bluffs here with the Indians in 1804. The first settlement was made here in 1846 by Mormons.
