Joplin, Missouri, a city in Jasper and Newton counties. It lies at the edge of the Ozarks near the southwestern corner of the state. Joplin is a manufacturing city and the center of a productive lead- and zinc-mining area. Missouri Southern State College is here. Joplin was settled in about 1840. It has a council-manager form of government.
