Geography of Pierre
Pierre, South Dakota, the state capital and the seat of Hughes County. It is on the Missouri River, 190 miles (306 km) west-northwest of Sioux Falls. Pierre is a trade and distribution center for the surrounding grain- and livestock-producing area. Places of interest include the State Capitol, the Cultural Heritage Center, the South Dakota Discovery Center and Aquarium, and nearby Oahe Dam.
Pierre, which took its name from the fort across the river, grew after the railway was built in 1880. It became the capital in 1889 when South Dakota became a state.
