Evansville, Indiana, the seat of Vanderburgh County. It is an Ohio River port near the junction of the Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois state lines. Health services, commerce, and manufacturing are the mainstays of the economy. Items made here include sheet aluminum, refrigerators, pharmaceuticals, and plastics. Evansville is a major transportation hub served by highway, rail, river, and air. Chief attractions are a museum of arts and sciences, a zoo, and ancient Indian mounds. Educational institutions include the University of Evansville and the University of Southern Indiana.

Evansville was settled in 1812 and incorporated in 1819. It was named for Robert M. Evans, a territorial legislator.
