Geography of Independence
Independence, Missouri, the seat of Jackson County. It is just east of Kansas City, Missouri. Independence has oil refineries and factories producing ammunition, grain combines, cement, space heaters, and plastic goods. Harry S. Truman became a resident in 1919 and returned in 1953 after serving as President. In the Harry S. Truman Library are his papers, books, and mementos, and a museum for exhibits on his Presidency. Independence is also world headquarters of the Community of Christ.
Independence was founded in 1827. For many years it was the starting point for pioneers traveling west on the California, Oregon, and Santa Fe trails.
