Geography of Trivandrum
Thiruvananthapuram, India, the capital of the state of Kerala. It is on India's southwestern coast. Thiruvananthapuram is the trading and processing center for an area that produces rice, coconuts, and rubber. The city is also noted for ivory carvings. One of its main features is an ancient temple to the Hindu god Vishnu. Also here are Kerala University, several museums, a zoo, an aquarium, and the former palace of the maharajas. Thiruvananthapuram, prior to the establishment of Kerala in 1956, was the capital of the maharaja-ruled states of Travancore (from the early 1700's) and Travancore-Cochin (1949–56).
