Geography of Darjeeling

Darjeeling, India, a city in West Bengal state, northeastern India. It lies on the south flank of the Himalayas about 7,000 feet (2,100 m) above sea level, near the Nepal and Bhutan borders. Within view from the city are towering, snowcapped peaks, including Kanchenjunga, third highest mountain in the world—28,208 feet (8,598 m).

Darjeeling is famous for tea, which is produced on steep hillsides in the surrounding area. The city is a remote but popular resort, noted for magnificent scenery, ethnic and cultural diversity, and fine weather. The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute is in Darjeeling. The city has a botanical garden and a large outdoor bazaar.
