Mysore, India, a city in Karnataka state. Mysore lies about 85 miles (135 km) south-southwest of Bangalore, the state capital. The city is a major center for the production of incense and sandalwood oil. Formerly a royal capital, Mysore has several impressive palaces. Among the city's other attractions are a zoo and an art museum. The University of Mysore (founded in 1916) is here. The Dasara, a colorful Hindu festival, takes place in the city each fall. The site of Mysore was inhabited before the third century, B.C. The city was the capital of several dynastic states from the early 17th to the mid-20th century.
