, India, the capital of Bihar state. It is on the Ganges River in northeastern India, 290 miles (467 km) northwest of Calcutta. Patna is a commercial center for a rice-growing area. Handicrafts and processed foods are produced.

Patna University, Bihar College of Engineering, Pasteur Institute, and the Hindi Institute are here. Buried beneath Patna is the ancient city of Pataliputra, capital of the Magadha kingdom in the sixth century B.C. Patna was made capital of Bihar state in the 16th century, and again in 1912.
