Geography of Kanpur
Kanpur (formerly Cawnpore), India, a city in Uttar Pradesh state and one of the largest cities in India. It is on the Ganges River in north-central India about 240 miles (390 km) southeast of Delhi. Kanpur is one of India's leading industrial cities and is also a commercial center and railway hub. Textiles, leather goods, and chemicals are among the main products. Educational institutions include a state university and a technical institute.
Kanpur was a village until the 19th century, when it was developed by the British. In 1857, during the Indian Mutiny, it was the scene of a massacre in which virtually the entire British garrison and their dependents were killed.
