Geography of Pondicherry
Pondicherry, India, a Union Territory consisting of four widely separated areas in southern India. On the east coast are Yanam, Pondicherry, and Karikal; on the west coast is Mahé. The total area is 185 square miles (480 km2). The seaport of Pondicherry is the largest city. Tamil and French are official languages.
These four settlements, along with Chandernagor, were founded as French trading posts in the 17th century and were formerly called French India. The territory of Pondicherry was returned to Indian administration in 1954. A 1956 Franco-Indian treaty made it part of India. It is administered by the central government.
