Geography of Champaign

Champaign, Illinois, a city in Champaign County. It is in a fertile farming region, 125 miles (200 km) southwest of Chicago. The University of Illinois is officially situated in Urbana, a smaller city that adjoins Champaign on the east, but part of the campus is in Champaign. The two cities form an economic unit of which Champaign is the industrial center. Its factories produce soybean products, forgings and castings, clothing, and chemicals. Champaign was founded as The Depot in 1854. It took its present name when it was incorporated in 1860.
