Geography of Erfurt
Erfurt, Germany, the capital of the state of Thuringia. It lies on the Gera River, 65 miles (105 km) southwest of Leipzig. Erfurt is a rail center with many heavy industries. Many buildings date to the 13th century, including the Augustinian monastery where Martin Luther took his vows. Erfurt was the site of the Congress of Erfurt (1808), at which Napoleon, Alexander I of Russia, and several German kings met.
