Geography of Heidelberg
Heidelberg, Germany, a city in the state of Baden-Württemberg. It is on the Neckar River a short distance east of the Rhine. Heidelberg is mainly a university city and a research center, with some light manufacturing. Located here are the University of Heidelberg and four major research institutes. Headquarters of the U.S. Army in Europe is also here. With its partially ruined castle, its museums, and its picturesque setting, Heidelberg is also a tourist center.
Heidelberg dates at least as far back as the 1190's. It was capital of the Palatinate, one of the states that made up medieval Germany, from 1225 to 1720. The city, including the castle and university, was devastated by the French in 1689 and 1693, during the War of the Grand Alliance. Heidelberg passed to the control of Baden in 1803.
