Thuringia

Thuringia, (German: Thüringen), a state in east-central Germany. In the fifth century a Germanic tribe, the Thuringians, occupied the area that came to be known as the Thuringian Forest. The land came under the control of the Franks in the sixth century and was made a frontier province in the ninth century. Throughout much of its history Thuringia was held by a branch of the Wettin family of Saxony. After World War I it was made a separate state, but it was combined with Saxony in 1934. After World War II it was a state of East Germany until 1952, when it was split up into smaller administrative districts. In 1990 Thuringia was reconstituted as a state in reunified Germany.
