Geography of Osnabruck

Osnabrück, Germany, a city in the state of Lower Saxony. It is on the Hase River about 70 miles (113 km) west of Hannover. Osnabrück is primarily an industrial city, producing iron and steel, machinery, copper goods, chemicals, textiles, and paper. It is also a transportation center, served by several main railways. A short canal connects Osnabrück's inland port to the Ems-Weser Canal.

Osnabrück was settled by Saxons in the sixth century. It was made a bishopric by Charlemagne in 783. During the Middle Ages the city was a commercial center in the Hanseatic League. One of the treaties of the Peace of Westphalia, ending the Thirty Years' War, was signed here in 1648. Osnabrück was heavily bombed during World War II, but was later rebuilt.
