Geography of Darmstadt

Darmstadt, Germany, a city in the state of Hesse. The city is about 15 miles (24 km) south of Frankfurt am Main. The older section has a market square and a town hall. The newer section has a fine palace, a large library, a picture gallery, a museum, and a technical university. Products include machinery, diesel engines, and chemicals.

Darmstadt came into the hands of the Hesse family in 1479. In 1567 it became the capital of the Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt. During 1919-45 it was the capital of the state of Hesse.
