Geography of Wittenberg
Wittenberg, Germany, a historically important city in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. It was the home of two leaders of the Protestant Reformation—Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon, whose statues stand in the marketplace. In 1517 Luther tacked his revolutionary 95 theses, or assertions, to the doors of the Schlosskirche (castle church). The doors burned in 1760 but were replaced by bronze doors bearing the Latin text of the theses. An oak tree marks the spot where Luther in 1520 publicly burned the papal bull excommunicating him.
Wittenberg overlooks the Elbe River, about 55 miles (89 km) southwest of Berlin. Products manufactured here include chemicals and fertilizers.
