Geography of Bochum

Bochum, Germany, a city in North Rhine-Westphalia state, about 55 miles (90 km) north of Bonn. Located in the Ruhr, western Germany's chief coal-mining and industrial region, Bochum is a major producer of iron, steel, coke, and chemicals. A university and a mining school are here. Bochum was known by the ninth century. Its industrial development began in the 1860's.
