Geography of Jena
Jena, yã'nä, Germany, a city in the state of Thuringia, on the Saale River 45 miles (72 km) southwest of Leipzig. Products include machinery, chemicals, and printed matter. The Zeiss optical works, established here in 1846, was largely dismantled after World War II. The city was chartered in 1230. Its university, now Friedrich Schiller University, was founded in 1558. The faculty in the 1790's included the author Schiller and the philosophers Fichte and Schelling. Napoleon defeated the Prussians near Jena in 1806.
