Düsseldorf, Germany, the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is on the Rhine River, about 22 miles (35 km) north of Cologne. Düsseldorf is the commercial and banking center for the Ruhr industrial district. It is a railway hub and a port for foreign trade, and is served by numerous airlines. The city's factories produce iron and steel products, chemicals, glass, porcelain, and textiles. Düsseldorf was chartered in 1288. It was the center of a 19th-century school of painting.
