Geography of Potsdam

Potsdam, põts'dãm. Germany, the capital of the state of Brandenburg. It is on the Havel River, just southwest of Berlin. Potsdam is a center of light manufacturing and motion-picture making. The city was probably established in the 10th century by Slavs. Beginning in the 17th century Potsdam became a favorite residence of Prussian kings and nobility. Sans Souci Palace and many of the city's other landmarks date to the 18th century. Frederick the Great, who ruled Prussia during 1740–86, is buried at Sans Souci.
