Geography of Archangel

Archangel, (Russian: Arkhangelsk, COD11), Russia, a city and a seaport. It lies on the delta of the Northern Dvina River near the coast of the White Sea. The port, just south of the Arctic Circle, is open less than six months of the year. Archangel is one of Russia's chief processors and exporters of forest products—mainly lumber, paper, pulp, resin, and turpentine. Other industries include shipbuilding, fish canning, flour milling, and textile manufacturing. Archangel was settled in 1583 and named for a monastery that occupied the site. Until St. Petersburg was founded in 1703, Archangel was Russia's only seaport. During World Wars I and II, it was one of the few Russian ports not blockaded by Germany.

Population: 416,000.
