Geography of Grozny
Grozny, or Groznyy, the capital of the Chechen Republic, a part of Russia. Grozny is on the north side of the Caucasus Mountains, on a tributary of the Terek River. The city is an important center for oil production. Grozny was founded in 1818. In 1991 the Chechen Republic declared itself independent but Russia did not recognize its independence. In 1994 Russia invaded the republic, precipitating a war. Grozny, which suffered severe damage during the war, fell to Russian forces in 1995. It was recaptured by Chechens in 1996, but in 1999 Russian forces reoccupied the city.
