Geography of Ufa
Ufa, Russia, the capital of the Bashkir Republic, a constituent republic of Russia. The city is west of the Ural Mountains at the junction of the Belaya and Ufa rivers. Ufa is a large manufacturing and oil-refining center. It is also a railway junction and a river port. Items produced in Ufa include automobile engines, mining machinery, clothing, and processed foods. Ufa was founded as a Muscovite frontier fortress in 1524. It has long been a cultural center of the Bashkirs, a Turkic people. Ufa is the seat of the religious head of the Muslims in European Russia.
