Geography of Kazan

Kazan, the capital of the Tatarstan, a part of Russia. It is on the Volga River at its junction with the Kazanka River, about 440 miles (710 km) east of Moscow. Kazan is a highly industrialized city, a transportation hub, and a cultural center of the Tatar people. Attractions include a 16th-century kremlin; cathedrals and mosques; and opera and ballet theaters. Kazan's university, founded in 1804, is one of the oldest universities in the nation.

Kazan was founded in the 14th century and flourished after 1446 as the capital of a Tatar khanate. The city fell to the Russians in 1552. Rapid growth came after the mid-19th century and after World War II.
