Geography of Chelyabinsk
Chelyabinsk, or Cheliabinsk, Russia, the capital of Chelyabinsk oblast (region). The city lies along the Miass River in the eastern foothills of the Ural Mountains, about 930 miles (1,500 km) east of Moscow. Chelyabinsk is known as “the Gateway to Siberia.” The city is a major rail junction. Factories here produce a variety of products, including tractors, chemicals, and iron and steel. The city was founded in 1648 as a frontier outpost and became an industrial center after World War I.
