Geography of Tiruchchi-Rappalli
Tiruchchirappalli, India, a city in Tamil Nadu state. It was formerly called Trichinopoly. It is on the Cauvery River, about 200 miles (320 km) northeast of India's southernmost tip. The city is mainly a processing center for cotton and tobacco grown in the surrounding area. Manufactured articles include textiles, cigars, mats, and carpets. The city is served by railroads, roads, a canal, and an airport.
The Rock Fort, a rock 273 feet (83 m) high, rises abruptly above the city. On the rock are several Hindu temples, some dating from the early 17th century. St. Joseph's College and the National College are the chief educational institutions. During the mid-1700's Tiruchchirappalli was the scene of fighting between the British and the French.
