Geography of Lucknow

Lucknow, India, the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh. It is on the Gomati River about 250 miles (400 km) southeast of New Delhi. Lucknow is an important rail and highway junction and a trading center for grains, sugarcane, and other agricultural products. Industries include the processing of foods and the making of textiles and handicrafts. The city has many palaces, mosques, and parks.

Lucknow was a part of the Jaunpur kingdom during the 1300's, and later became capital of the kingdom of Oudh. The city was a center of the Indian (or Sepoy) Mutiny, which broke out in 1857. The British garrison in Lucknow was besieged for nearly five months before being rescued by forces under Colin Campbell.
