Battery Park
Battery Park, a 21-acre (8.5-hectare) open area at the southern tip of New York City's Manhattan Island. It provides a good view of New York Harbor, the Hudson River, and the Statue of Liberty. The Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel passes under the park. The area occupied by the park was originally the site of a Dutch fort. It got the name “the Battery" from a battery of cannon installed by the British in colonial times.
