Geography of Lead

Lead, South Dakota, a city in Lawrence County. It is the site of the Homestake Mine, one of the largest producing gold mines in the Western Hemisphere. Many tourists come to see it in operation. Lead is in the Black Hills, at an altitude of 5,300 feet (1,615 m). It lies just south of Deadwood and 35 miles (56 km) northwest of Rapid City. Lead was settled in 1876 after gold was found in the area. It was incorporated in 1890.
