Jefferson City, Missouri, the state capital and the seat of Cole County. Jefferson City is on the Missouri River. It is near the center of the state, 107 miles (172 km) west of St. Louis. Industries include printing and bookbinding and the manufacture of cosmetics and electrical products. Lincoln University is here. The Capitol has murals by Thomas Hart Benton and N. C. Wyeth. The Missouri State Museum is also in the Capitol. Jefferson City was founded in 1822 as the future site of the state capital. It became the capital in 1826.
