Hibbing, Minnesota, a city in St. Louis County, 60 miles (97 km) northwest of Duluth. Hibbing is a chief center of the Mesabi Range iron-mining region, site of one of the world's largest deposits of iron ore. Nearby is the huge Hull-Rust-Mahoning open-pit mine, where ore has been stripped from beneath a shallow cover of soil. Hibbing was settled in 1892.
