Geography of Morelia

Morelia, Mexico, the capital of the state of Michoacán. The city is about 130 miles (210 km) west-northwest of Mexico City. Morelia is a major processing center for agricultural products and is also an important center for the production of handicrafts. The city has preserved the look of a Spanish colonial town. Major structures from the colonial period include the cathedral (built 1640–1744) and the government palace (1732–70). The College of St. Nicholas, founded at a nearby village in 1540, is Mexico's oldest institution of higher learning.

A Spanish settlement was established here in 1541. The city was known as Valladolid until 1828.
