Geography of Merida

Mérida, Mexico, the capital of the state of Yucatán. It is 23 miles (37 km) inland from the north coast, and about 625 miles (1,000 km) east-northeast of Mexico City, in a region that produces the fiber henequen. In Mérida are a university and a 16th-century cathedral. The city was founded in 1542 on the site of a prehistoric Mayan city. Within 75 miles (120 km) are the ruins of Chichén-Itzá and other Mayan cities.
