Geography of Aguascalientes
Aguascalientes, Mexico, the capital of Aguascalientes state. It is 265 miles (425 km) northwest of Mexico City. Products include leather goods, furniture, paint, textiles, pottery, and serapes. Large railway repair shops are here. Aguascalientes is a health resort with hot springs (the name is Spanish for “hot waters”) and is situated at an altitude of 6,225 feet (1,897 m) above sea level. Under the city is a large network of tunnels built by ancient Indians of unknown origin.
Aguascalientes was founded in 1575 as a Spanish outpost against hostile Indians. Nearby silver mines influenced the city's early growth but later declined. The establishment of railway shops helped in the growth of the modern city.
