Geography of Acapulco

Acapulco, (full name, Acapulco de Juárez), Mexico, a city and seaport in Guerrero State. It is about 185 miles (300 km) south-southwest of Mexico City. Much of Acapulco is perched on high, rocky cliffs overlooking scenic coves and beaches of Acapulco Bay, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean. The city is an internationally famous seaside resort with luxurious hotels and glittering nightclubs. It is also a shipping point for coffee, sugar, cotton, and hides. Acapulco was founded by Spanish explorers in the middle of the 16th century and is the oldest port on the North American Pacific coast. It served as the chief port for trade between Asia and the New World for almost 300 years. The city has several times suffered severe damage from earthquakes and hurricanes. A hurricane in 1997 left 300,000 homeless.
