Geography of Leon
León, Mexico, the largest city in the state of Guanajuato. It is situated along the Gómez River in a wheat-growing region, about 235 miles (378 km) northwest of Mexico City. León is a shoemaking center. Also produced here are textiles, leather goods, soap, food products, and metal goods. Gold and silver are mined nearby. The cathedral in the city's main square was built in the 18th century. León has a technological institute. Camanjilla, a hot springs resort, is nearby. The Spanish settled the area in 1552 and Leon was founded in 1576. The city frequently suffered from floods and was largely destroyed by one in 1888. A dike was later constructed.
