Geography of Cuernavaca

Cuernavaca, Mexico, the capital of the state of Morelos. It is 51 miles (82 km) south of Mexico City in a sugar-producing region. Cuernavaca's elevation of more than 5,000 feet (1,524 m) gives it a mild climate year-round and makes it a popular tourist resort. In the city are the Autonomous University of Morelos and a palace built in the 1530's for Hernando Cortez, the Spanish conqueror of Mexico. Cortez captured the city from the Aztecs In 1521.
