Geography of London
London, Ontario, the seat of Middlesex County. It is a port on the Thames River, halfway between Toronto and Detroit. The city is served by rail and air. Manufactured products include auto parts, boxes, locomotives, refrigerators, hosiery, paper and printed matter, sheet metal products, bakery goods, adhesives, chemicals, and breakfast foods.
London is the seat of the University of Western Ontario and of several small colleges. Many of its place-names, such as Hyde Park, Piccadilly, Pall Mall, and Trafalgar, are borrowed from its English namesake. The site of London was selected as that for the future capital of Upper Canada (now called Ontario) in 1792, but it was not settled until 1826, by which time the capital had been permanently established at York (now Toronto). London was incorporated as a city in 1855.
