Geography of St. Catharines
St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, a city on Lake Ontario and the Welland Canal, near Niagara Falls. It is an industrial city with a variety of manufacturing industries. A specialty is the processing of produce, mainly fruit, grown in the surrounding area. Brock University is here.
St. Catharines was founded in the 1790's, incorporated as a town in 1845, and chartered as a city in 1876. In 1961 the nearby towns of Port Dalhousie and Merritton and part of Grantham township were annexed. The city became part of the Regional Municipality of Niagara in the late 1960's.
