Geography of Vladivostok
Vladivostok, Russia, a city on the country's Pacific coast. Vladivostok is a major port and Russia's chief naval base on the Pacific. The city is on a peninsula in Peter the Great Bay, an inlet of the Sea of Japan. The excellent natural harbor is kept open in winter by icebreakers. Vladivostok is the eastern terminus of the Trans-Siberian Railway. Industries include shipbuilding, lumber milling, and meat and fish canning. The city is the home port for a large fishing fleet. The Far Eastern State University is here. Vladivostok was founded in 1860. It grew rapidly after the Trans-Siberian Railway was completed in 1904. During World Wars I and II Vladivostok was an important port for war supplies.
