Geography of Novokuznetsk

Novokuznetsk, Russia, a city on the Tom River in southern Siberia, about 1,850 miles (2,980 km) east-southeast of Moscow. Novokuznetsk is the chief industrial city in the coal-rich Kuznetsk Basin and has one of Russia's largest iron and steel works. There are also large engineering, chemical, ferro-alloy, and aluminum plants.

The city was founded in 1617 as Kuznetsk. It was a small settlement until 1929, when work began nearby on a giant iron and steel plant. During 1932-61 the city was known as Stalinsk.
