Geography of Taganrog
Taganrog, Russia, a city on the Gulf of Taganrog, an inlet of the Sea of Azov. The city is a major center of industry, producing iron and steel, machinery, processed foods, and leather goods. It is also a port for shipping coal and grain from the Donets Basin.
After its founding by Peter the Great in 1698, Taganrog was captured twice by the Turks. In 1769 the Russians permanently regained it. During much of the 19th century, before the rise of Odessa, Taganrog was Russia's leading Black Sea port. The writer Anton Chekhov was born in Taganrog in 1860. German troops occupied the city in 1918 during World War I and from 1941 to 1943 during World War II.
