Geography of Ajmer
Ajmer, India, a city and administrative center in Rajasthan state. It lies in a hot, semiarid hilly region about 220 miles (355 km) southwest of New Delhi, the nation's capital. Ajmer is served by several railways and roads and has long been a locally important trade and transportation center. Products include cotton textiles, salt, and wooden handicraft items. Among notable buildings and institutions are Mayo Rajkumar College and the marble mausoleum of Mu'in al-Din Chishti, a Muslim religious leader. Ajmer was settled early in the 12th century. From the 16th to the 18th century it was a military stronghold and a favorite retreat of Mogul emperors.
