Geography of Nagpur
Nagpur, India, a city in Maharashtra state. It is on the Deccan Plateau in central India. Nagpur is a commercial, industrial, and transportation center. The city is noted for its trade in oranges. Products manufactured here include textiles, iron, and brassware. The University of Nagpur is the city's leading educational institution.
Nagpur was founded early in the 18th century and soon became the military stronghold of one of the states that made up the Maratha Confederacy. The city was annexed by the British in 1853. In 1861 Nagpur was made the capital of the Central Provinces, formed by the British. It remained the capital when the Central Provinces became Madhya Pradesh state in 1950. In 1956 Nagpur became a part of Maharashtra state.
